Event Description

Learning Even More About Your Favorite Local Native Plants Using Calflora

Presenter: Cynthia Powell

Virtual Event Sept 2nd 2020 7 pm

Cynthia Powell, Executive Director of Calflora (a non-profit wild-plant data clearinghouse for California), will share how to use their site to learn about our regional plants. Calflora’s plant database hosts over 2 million plant occurrences, some of which come directly from Redbud CNPS members (including prolific Jeff Bisbee and Hannah Kang!). CNPS Chapter members are an extremely valuable source of plant distribution data in Calflora.

Cynthia will also cover how to use other Calflora tools, such as the amazing wealth of data coming from their photo project iNaturalist; population monitoring tools; and soil, water, and climate tolerances for specific plants. Before this program on September 2, if you’re an avid gardener, try Calflora’s Planting Guide to see which (native, of course) plants will grow best at a specific location, so we can discuss the characteristics of the species on your list. This is a free event; please RSVP here.

See all Redbud CNPS region wild plant observations since 2015.

If you would like to help enter Chapter checklists into Calflora, please note that in the RSVP document. Cynthia and Hannah got a head start here:

After 3 years as Calflora’s GIS Project Manager, Cynthia became Calflora’s Executive Director in 2016. She graduated with her MS in GIS (Geographic Information Science and databases) in 2010 forecasting Mokelumne River water supply based on MODIS remote sensing snow pack images. She’s been examining what was under that snow — plants — ever since. She now coordinates all Calflora programs, research, outreach, and advocacy, as well as fundraising and project management.

She’s been examining what was under that snow — plants — ever since. Here is Cynthia’s native plant observations portfolio (feedback welcome). Cynthia now coordinates all Calflora programs, research, outreach, and advocacy, as well as fundraising and project management. Calflora’s ED wears many hats, and now a mask as well.
